Doug Pendygraft  – Interview by Phil Pendleton. Pendygraft still holds the record for the most individual points scored in a Basketball National Tournament when he played for Lindsay Wilson. Later he played for Coach Rupp at UK. He talks about those things and his experiences coaching many Lincoln County teams. He also discusses Stanford’s rivalries with several area opponents, how sports were affected when the schools were integrated, the difficulties of the 70’s, and some of the other coaches and players.  CLICK HERE

Doug Pendygraft – Men’s Basketball (1958-1960)

Doug was named All-KJCC in 1959 and 1960 when he led LWC to conference and region championships both years. In the 1959-60 season, Doug finished third in the nation in scoring, averaging 25 points per game. He set an NJCAA record with 63 points in a national tournament game in 1960, earning MVP honors in the tournament. Doug went on to play for the legendary Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky in 1960-61 and 1961-62.

DOUG PENDYGRAFT—Junior—Guard—Parksville, Ky.—Along with new teammate Vince Del Negro, Pendygraft comes to Kentucky this season as the result of Coach Rupp’s efforts to strengthen his hand immediately in the game of chance having the national title at stake. The 6-2 native Kentuckian from Parksville, joining a select list of junior college graduates (five previously) who have continued their education and careers at UK, spent his first two collegiate years at Lindsey Wilson Junior College of Columbia, Ky. During the 1959-60 campaign, Pendygraft developed into one of the nation’s top JC cagers—establishing all kinds of scoring records, winning unanimous selection at Most Valuable Player in the national JC tournament and attaining All-America honors. He was leading scorer of the tournament, with 154 points in four games, and eclipsed by 10 points the previous one-game high as he notched 63 in pacing the LW Blue Raiders over Grand View (Iowa) in the fourth-place finale. Pendy-graft’s 28 field goals in the final game also toppled a seven-year-old tourney record and he was the number one choice on the All-Tournament team. Having already agreed to play his final two seasons at Kentucky, he also became the third winner of the MVP award to attend UK. Previous UK-bound recipients were Bob Burrow and Sid Cohen. Pendygraft’s 25.7 scoring average for the past season slotted him just behind new teammate Del Negro in junior college ranks. He played against Del Negro in the post-season Junior College All-America Classic and the pair wound up in a virtual standoff for scoring honors as Pendygraft posted 51 in the three-game series while the North’s Del Negro showed a total of 54. Doug was coached at Lindsey Wilson by Doug Hines, who preceeded him to Kentucky to become an assistant coach, and succeeds graduated Bennie Coffman as a LW alum on the Wildcat roster. Pendygraft is being counted on to play a lot of guard this winter. He is a clever ball handler and possesses good speed and shooting ability. Year G Sts. Time FG FT Reb.
